BPF continued

To finance these first beds, a Horse Journal was put together by, again Donald Pollitt wherein ads were sold and the funds
used to buy plants. The beds were ablaze in spring with Lorraine’s signature Red Emperor tulips, then marigolds and mums Later ornamental cabbages followed.to make
12 month coverage. Many people in the Village stopped to ask
who was doing all this planting. From these interested citizens the new organization started to thrive. Today, there are 13 beds throughout the Village and a devoted group
of about 20 volunteers who run the organization.

MIDDLE PERIOD
In the years since 1983, the number of beds has expanded to 13 from the original two triangles at 107 & Wheatley Rd. Joan Bebry became president in 1983 and promoted a Horse Journal together with Donald Pollitt to raise funds for the flower beds. The few members at that time did all the work themselves, planned and planted the flowers, sold the ads in the Horse Journal, and mailed annual solicitations to Village residents to fund plantings. Little by little the organization grew stronger and in 1993 Donald Pollitt asked Joan Huber to be VP of Beautification to plan the beds and work with the newly hired landscaping service. A strong capital expenditure program ensued, aided in great part by the Mayor’s outings

and newly elected President, Caroline Z. Bazzini who was the great inspirational force behind the expansion of activities.
The “Welcome to Brookville” signs that outline our Village and the unique post street markers were initiated, designed and placed by the “BPF”. Later they were deeded to the Village and upkeep is now paid for by the Village. This project started in 1997 and was completed in 1999.

Severe winter weather did great damage to the planting beds in several winters from 2000-2005. With the expanded work
Genevieve Johanas and Nancy Copperman joined Joan Huber in the management of the flower and shrub beds. Water was added, trees were pruned, and the beds completely
rejuvenated. In 2004, the “BPF” installed a new fence and cleared many dead trees and underbrush to clear areas for the North Shore Garden Club to make new plantings at the Jane Franke Bird Sanctuary. This was followed by the first
Beautification Day to which all resident were invited to participate in putting in new plantings. Beautification Day 2006 included planting the first xeriscape bed in our locale
which was engineered by Nancy Copperman.
The Beautification Days have been followed by a buffet luncheon at Genevieve and Jay Johanas.
The Foundation enjoys a lively calendar each year with five evening meetings at members’ homes where many friendships are born. Each year there is an annual Outing to a site of common interest. These have been successfully run by Christina Lyon for the past five years with the 2006 outing at the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens.

For the past several years, our annual
meeting has been held in the Great Hall at C.W. Post University through the aid of Dr. Pamela Lennox, and the support of C.W. Post.

THE FUTURE
The future depends on the residents of
Brookville. We need not only your annual contributions but we need volunteers.
Please help continue the good work of the Brookville Park Foundation.
