Many thanks for working so hard for our village.
I live at 68 Wheatley rd and have since 1987. My wife lived at 50 Wheatley rd growing up and her father, Tom Choate, was mayor many years ago.
We hear of under-funded pension plans. If Muttontown is leaving us, I trust they are not walking away from their pension commitments?

Dear Guy De Chazal,
Many thanks for your kind words – our Village Officials are working very hard on resolving all outstanding issues with the OBPD.
To answer your question, according to the 7-Village Police Protection Contract, if a Village withdraws, that Village is responsible
for their portion of all liabilities for benefits accrued up until the expiration of the contract which is May 31, 2011.

I have just received the email explaining that Upper Brookville will still be part of the OBPD group. While I am happy to hear that, my major concern is my taxes. I am hoping that we will not suffer a tax increase due to Muttontown pulling out of the group. I believe that allowing Muttontown to have a larger say based on their higher percentage would have been the right thing to do. What you must understand is that we in Brookville are overtaxed and overassessed at this time and are pushed to the tax limit.
Please let me know if there will be a tax increase resulting from this issue.

Note from the Mayor: Thank you for your email. To answer your questions: 1)The police budget (and our corre sponding share of it) that was approved at the March 2011 Board of Police Commissioners meeting is the same exact amount that we are using for the new 6-Village contract. 2) Residents will see a small tax increase of less than one cent per $100 assessed. 3) We have looked into other policing options. Currently, Nassau County policing services run about 15% more than we are paying and it is expected that next year these costs are projected to be considerably higher.

I thank you for keeping us informed. However, I would like to know the financial impact all this will have on Brookville.
In addition, are we reducing the staff since we lost Muttentown? I spoke with Muttontown and they informed me that OBPD had a detective squad which costs the villages 1.2 million a year. Is this true? According to the people I spoke to, these are some of the reasons they established their own police department. Needless to say the village taxes are too high as well as our property, school, and general taxes. I am concerned by the impact this has on our village taxes.

Note from the Mayor: To answer your questions:
1) The financial impact of the OBPD remains the same. At the March 2011 Board of Police Commissioners meeting the 7 Villages approved a budget for the new FY beginning June 1, 2011. Brookville's share of that budget remains unchanged. But we are now working with a smaller overall budget.
2) Yes, we are downsizing to accommodate a police force appropriate for 6 Villages.
3) The detective division is being dramatically downsized with accompanying cost savings. That budget line has not been finalized.
4) We are all concerned about taxes. And none of us wishes to see them rise. To that end, I am always working to cut costs and affect savings in our Village so that taxes can stay the same or with minimal increase.
5) Your suggestion about posting Q&A on the Village website is a good one. We are working to do just that.

Please negotiate with our full support to cut some expenses without Muttontown. The remaining will absorb the budget as needed. Would NOT reduce Muttontown’s share just to keep them.

Thank you for all the work you are doing - if Linda or myself can assist in a small way, please advise.
The issue I believe with the OBPD in all the entitlements, which as with most civil servants, are out of formula. This is what I understand is Muttontown's issue - to get out from under this burden.
